Myth #7 : You Can Never Get Rid of Back Taxes
This has never been true as Congress enabled legislation to reclassify tax debt if it met certain criteria. Generally, if the tax debt is older than three years from the end of the last calendar year and tax returns were filed timely, the debt can be discharged. The exceptions to this is when false returns are filed or the IRS files the return on estimated income. These “involuntary” returns to not qualify as filed returns for purposes of avoiding payment of taxes.
